Job Title:

  • Associate Professor

Phone:

  • +1 (403) 220-7085

Office:

  • A 257A

Degrees:

  • 1998 - Ph.D. Clinical Psychology - University of Minnesota

Interests:

  • My research interests focus on eating disorders. I am particularly interested in questions related to aetiology, classification, and assessment of eating problems. I use varying methods to elucidate risk, resilience, and maintenance factors for eating disorders in pre-teens, adolescents, and adults and to better characterize the spectrum of eating disturbances. For example, I have investigated associations between eating problems and comorbid psychopathology, including anxiety and substance abuse, in an effort to understand whether these disorders might share aetiological or maintenance factors. I am also interested in the conceptualization of eating disorders as addictions. In another arm of my research program, I study the gap between research recommendations and practitioners' choice of psychotherapies for eating disorders.

Among the research projects I have underway are studies examining:
    - the ways in which members of Overeaters Anonymous believe OA has helped them
    - longitudinal associations of substance misuse with eating pathology in teenage girls
    - what psychotherapies Alberta psychotherapists use to treat eating disorders
    - associations between binge eating and personality in community women and men

Graduate students working under my supervision are conducting research related to eating disorders and associated pathology, including obesity. See my lab website ("Eating Behaviours Lab" link above) for details.
